Can I have multiple heating zones with a combination boiler

As long as the boiler is capable of providing enough hot water through the system to heat the whole house if necessary you shouldn't have a problem. What you are proposing is a "coarser" version of thermostatic valves on each radiator and that is perfectly safe for a combination boiler. I don't think you need return valves.

The Temperature in Your Boiler and the Dangers of Overheating

The average setting for a gas-powered hot water boiler is 180°F. This provides the appropriate level needed for most cold weather temperatures. If you can raise the temperature manually, do not set it any higher than 210°F (which is often the limit), and try to remain down at 190°F if you need the extra heat. Once a boiler starts to go over

Apr 01, 2003 · The second three-way thermostatic valve bypasses hot water from the boiler outlet back into the return water flow whenever it senses the return temperature falling below its setpoint. This action limits the amount of heat delivered to the other three-way valve when necessary to prevent the distribution system from gulping down heat faster than

Common Potterton Boiler Problems [And What To Do Next]

When a boiler ignites, it will take a while for the return pipe to heat up. Hot water comes out of the flow (so this pipe warms up within minutes). After travelling around your heating system (where water will lose heat) it comes back into the boiler via the return pipe. So, there will be a differential in temperature, but not a huge one.
